Zazpiak Bat

Vancouver Basque Society

“To preserve and encompass Basque language and culture”

About Us

Zazpiak Bat was started in 1993 by David Maritorena and Jose Miguel Etchart in Merritt, BC. Inspired by the Basque cultural clubs in the United States, David and Mike created Zazpiak Bat to grow the culture for the proud Euskalduns of Canada. Zazpiak Bat became officially recognized by the Basque government in 1995.

The club administration eventually relocated to Vancouver, BC where there was a larger population of Basques. Zazpiak Bat was then in the care of Elena Sommer, who served as president from 2002 to 2019. During this time the club was the most active it has been and truly flourished.

In 2019 Julia assumed the position of club President of Zazpiak Bat. Julia operates out of Merritt, BC along with the majority of the administration, and Zazpiak Bat is now back in Merritt where it all started.

Euskara is a complex and interesting language with ancient roots that remain unknown to this day. If you are interested in learning some common phrases or becoming a fluent speaker, learning Euskara can be a great way to connect to your heritage. Although our euskal etxea does not offer lessons, check out the NABO website for Euskara class availability.
